Halloween

I love Halloween. So much so that I'm writing about it more than a month and a half until it arrives. It's my favorite holiday, yes I like it even more than Christmas. I spend the month of October consuming all types of media that I associate with Halloween. Ever heard Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus? The perfect Halloween song in my opinion.

Scary books you say? Yes, gotta do that too. Not much better than this one.

Even video games.

Let's not forget comic books.

What I'd like to know is what do you like to listen to, watch, and read to celebrate Halloween. I'm always looking for more.

We all knew it would happen one day.

Saturday I will face the walking (and running) dead.

Have to make a best of list sometime, might as well be now. Comic book movies, my top 10.

#10- Spider-Man 2
A sequel that can stand on its own. Dr. Octopus is actually better in this movie than I've ever seen in comics.

#9- Iron Man
I never really liked Iron Man, then Robert Downey jr. got clean and sober.

#8- 300
So many classic lines. "This is Sparta!!!!" Bonus points for making a comic book movie women want to see as much as their men, although not for the same reasons

#7- The Avengers
"Hulk, smash." 'Nuff said.

#6- V for Vendetta
"Remember, remember, the fifth of November." A little history lesson for those that are doomed to repeat it.

#5- Spider-Man
Sam Raimi nailed it with some help from Tobey Maguire. The first superhero movie to get it right. I know I'll catch hell from the Superman fans for that comment.

#4- Sin City
The movie looked like Frank Miller drew it. Mickey Rourke finds the roll he was born to play, Marv.

#3- Batman Begins
The first superhero movie to take things seriously, and it worked.

#2- The Dark Knight
So we're going to watch a new Batman movie. Wrong, we're going to watch Heath Ledger become a legend.

#1- Watchmen
I believe the first true non animated adaptation of a comic book. It was said to be impossible but I was floored by this when I saw it in the theater. It surpassed my expectations, sorry Mr. Moore.

There you have it, my first best of list. Feel free to let me know where I am wrong, I love arguing about comic books.

     The most beautiful and sad thing I think I've ever read is a short story Bradbury wrote called "The Fog Horn." It"s about a lighthouse that attracts a sea monster searching for one of its own kind. When it hears the fog horn it thinks it has found another, when the horn is turned off it destroys the lighthouse and returns to the deep. The lighthouse is rebuilt but the monster never returns and you are left to wonder if maybe the last of a species has faded to extinction.
     Bradbury was a very sentimental writer, but never fell victim to melancholy. I think this is because he was a happy person that understood the necessity of the opposing emotion.
     I have not read all of his works, probably never will, but the ones I have read maintain an emotional resonance in me that few stories have.
     So raise a glass of Dandelion Wine in honor of a man who did it his way, the right way. We'll miss you Mr. Bradbury

     The first issue of Before Watchmen arrived in comic shops today. If you don't understand the magnitude of this, you probably don't read comics.
     Darwyn Cooke brings his A-game to the first issue of Minutemen. The Minutemen were the first "masks" to team up and do what "masks" do. The team included the original Night Owl, The Comedian, and others. Seeing as Cooke is one of the best comic creators out there right now I was pretty confident going in that it would be good and he didn't disappoint.
     I'm interested to see what the other titles bring to the table.

So, the Zombie Apocalypse has begun. The evidence is mounting, let's have a look.

Yup, Mitt needs brains. Good luck Mitt, don't think you'll find any in that crowd.
